The History Museum
of Hood River County
in partnership with
The National Endowment for the Humanities
presents

March 25 - June 20, 2010

The twentieth century brought profound changes for farm families
and their neighbors.  In 1900, 42% of the U.S. population worked in agriculture,
but by 2000, less that 2% of the population was involved in farm production.
Still, through generations of dramatic economic and social change, some
families have maintained the connections to farming, their land and the
rural communities in which they live and work.
This exhibit honors them.

Hood River County is the only Oregon stop for this nationally touring exhibit.

Farm Life is coming to Hood River County.

This exhibit is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and honors farming and farm families for their contribution to our past, present and future. The exhibit uses artifacts as well as informative and interesting text panels to tell the story of farming… not from the angle of tractors and equipment…but from the heart of the farm... the family.  The exhibit presents the story using four different themes:

  • Milking Night and Morning: A Family Business
  • Managing Farm and Family: Farm Fresh
  • Working the Land: Exchange of Labor
  • Gathering Together: Joining Hands

The staff and volunteers of The History Museum have been working on a variety of exhibits and displays focusing on agriculture and farming in Hood River County. These exhibits will remain on display until 2011 in honor of the rich agricultural heritage of our area.

Our series of Monday evening programs, Farm Life Voices, will present educational and inspirational speakers and panels.

The History Museum has also developed Educational Events for kids K- 5th grade, as well as special Exhibit Tours that will engage students and adults.  Educators, adult centers and community organizations are invited to contact the museum for more information.
